Clive completed a degree in commerce and accounting at the University of the Witwatersrand and in 1987 began serving articles at Price Waterhouse in Johannesburg. Clive previously had qualified as an Electronic-Mechanician while fulfilling a three year contract with Atlas Aircraft Corporation. Simultaneously in 1982, Clive completed a National Diploma in Electrical Engineering (light current) at the Witwatersrand Technikon.

Clive then pursued a career in investment management and joined Christopher Melville in late 1987 as a portfolio manager in the newly formed Solon Asset Management, which later was renamed Melville Douglas Investment Management. In 1992 he was appointed Assistant Managing Director and in 1995 Managing Director of Melville Douglas. In this role Clive acted as a director of several companies and Trustee of numerous Trusts. Melville Douglas managed portfolios for private clients, trusts, charitable foundations, school endowments and provident funds. Melville Douglas then privately owned, by the Douglas, Melville, Inglis and other families, was acquired by Standard Bank as part of its Private Banking initiative in 2001.

Clive was then appointed Managing Director of Standard Private Bank, which is recognised as one of the leading Private Bank offerings in South Africa. Standard Private Bank provides clients with banking, asset management, stock broking, financial planning and fiduciary services in South Africa and internationally. At the end of 2005 Clive left the bank to establish Douglas Investments, a niched and personalised investment firm. In 2006 Conexus was established by Douglas Investments in conjunction with Metier.

Clive Douglas is well known in South Africa, originally in the area of private client investment management, as well as in Private Banking.
